iM3NY, short for Imperium3 New York, Inc., is a leading independent lithium-ion battery manufacturer based in Endicott, New York. Established as one of the first and largest independent lithium-ion cell producers in the United States, iM3NY is dedicated to advancing energy sustainability through innovative battery solutions. The company operates a state-of-the-art 22,000-square-meter Gigafactory, which began commercial production in August 2022. This facility is a cornerstone of iM3NY’s mission to build a predominantly North American supply chain, aligning with its vision of “Built in America, for the World.”

iM3NY specializes in producing high-performance lithium-ion cells for a wide range of applications, including electric vehicles (EVs) such as cars, buses, trucks, and planes, as well as stationary energy storage systems. The company’s proprietary P-Series phosphate-based chemistry offers superior energy density and cost efficiency compared to traditional lithium-ion batteries. With a strong commitment to sustainability, iM3NY integrates environmentally responsible practices into its manufacturing processes, aiming to reduce carbon emissions and promote green technology.

Battery Technology

iM3NY’s battery technology is built on a foundation of innovation and sustainability, leveraging proprietary advancements developed in partnership with Charge CCCV LLC (C4V). The company utilizes C4V’s patented BMLMP (Biomineralization Mixed-Metal Phosphate) technology, which sets it apart in the lithium-ion battery market. This technology enables iM3NY’s cells to operate at a higher voltage (3.9 volts) compared to conventional Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) and Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) cells, delivering 10-20% greater energy density than LFP and cost advantages over NMC.

The BMLMP chemistry also enhances safety by using a mixed metal phosphate composition in the cathode, combined with traditional electrolytes. This design reduces the risk of thermal runaway, a critical safety concern in battery applications. Additionally, iM3NY’s batteries are free of cobalt and nickel, making them more environmentally friendly and ethically sourced.

The company’s manufacturing process is powered by hydroelectricity, further minimizing its carbon footprint. Independent studies by Abt Associates and the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) have confirmed that iM3NY’s batteries contain at least 87% less dirty energy per kilowatt-hour compared to industry standards. This positions iM3NY as a leader in producing some of the greenest batteries available globally.

Recent Projects

In recent years, iM3NY has faced financial challenges, including workforce reductions and disputes with former partner Magnis Energy Technologies. Despite these hurdles, the company has continued to focus on its technological advancements and environmental commitments. Notably, iM3NY has achieved certifications that could enable future scaling of production once additional funding is secured.

The company’s Gigafactory in Endicott, New York, initially aimed to produce 1.8 GWh of battery cells annually, with plans to expand to 38 GWh by 2030. While these expansion plans are currently on hold, iM3NY remains a significant player in the U.S. battery manufacturing sector, contributing to the domestic supply chain and supporting the electrification efforts of large U.S. corporations and the Department of Defense.

Investors

iM3NY has attracted investments from a mix of private equity firms, corporate investors, and government entities. Key investors include Riverstone Energy, which provided a $50 million senior secured term loan, and Magnis Energy Technologies, an Australian company that invested $23.6 million as part of a $35 million equity funding round. Additionally, Empire State Development, a New York government entity, has supported iM3NY with performance-based incentives totaling $7.5 million, including grants and tax credits. These investments underscore the confidence in iM3NY’s technology and its potential to reshape the North American battery market.
