IPG Photonics is a leading developer and manufacturer of high-performance fiber lasers, amplifiers, and laser-based automated systems for diverse applications. The company has played a significant role in transforming manufacturing processes across various industries globally, including materials processing, medical applications, and telecommunications. Known for its reliable and energy-efficient laser tools, IPG Photonics helps customers improve quality, lower costs, and maximize productivity. With a long-standing history of innovation, the company continues to advance laser technology, providing sophisticated solutions that address complex industrial challenges, particularly within the rapidly expanding e-mobility sector.

Battery Technology

IPG Photonics provides advanced laser technologies vital for lithium-ion battery manufacturing, from cell fabrication to module and pack assembly. For cell manufacturing processes, its lasers enable precision cutting and notching of electrode foils, ensuring enhanced edge quality and manufacturing yield. High-precision laser welding is used for tab-to-foil and foil stack connections, as well as for cell case sealing, including cap-to-case and injection hole sealing, which contributes to cell integrity and safety. Emerging laser drying solutions for electrode coatings provide energy-efficient, non-contact drying, improving process speed and uniformity. Laser welding also ensures the proper function of safety valves within battery cells.

In module and pack assembly, IPG’s laser systems are essential for busbar welding, joining cells into modules with high strength, conductivity, speed, and repeatability. Advanced techniques like dual-beam and wobble laser welding facilitate defect-free joining of battery modules into trays or enclosures, minimizing porosity and other weld defects. Additionally, IPG’s patented real-time and non-destructive laser weld measurement technology provides 100% inline inspection without increasing cycle time, mitigating risks in mass production. These technologies allow for versatile applications in welding various cell types (cylindrical, prismatic, pouch) and components, including highly reflective materials like copper and aluminum.

Recent Projects

In 2025, IPG Photonics introduced several innovations designed for the e-mobility and battery sectors. The Rack-Integrated (RI) Laser Platform reduces the spatial footprint by 60%, enhancing reliability and simplifying factory integration for battery production lines. This platform uses next-generation pump diodes that offer higher power densities and resilience to humid conditions often found in battery manufacturing environments. IPG also released the LDD-1000-DS Deep Weld Imaging System, providing real-time, high-resolution weld quality analysis with penetration depths up to 50mm, significantly improving process monitoring for cell and module welding. Furthermore, the EV-Cube Battery Welding Systems provide automated, configurable laser welding solutions for mass production of EV battery modules and packs.
