Jolt Energy Storage Technologies, established in 2014 and based in Holland, Michigan, is an innovator in sustainable grid-scale energy storage. The company specializes in developing proprietary all-organic materials for redox flow batteries, a technology crucial for modernizing the electricity grid. Jolt’s primary goal is to enable the reliable and cost-effective integration of intermittent renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power, into the grid. By focusing on organic chemistry, Jolt aims to deliver energy storage solutions that are not only high-performing but also environmentally sound and economically viable.

Battery Technology

Jolt Energy Storage Technologies focuses on all-organic redox flow batteries, utilizing patented organic compounds derived from carbon and plant-based feedstocks. This approach distinguishes their technology from conventional flow batteries that rely on metal-based active materials like vanadium. Jolt’s proprietary molecules, specifically novel pyridinium salt derivatives, offer significant performance enhancements. Their technology achieves higher voltages, exceeding those of conventional pyridinium salts by over 1V, and boasts increased solubility and concentration, which translates to superior energy density and battery capacity.

The electrolyte formulation developed by Jolt enables faster charge and discharge cycles, lower viscosity, and higher conductivity, improving overall operational efficiency by reducing pumping losses. These organic batteries exhibit high durability, supporting thousands of charge-discharge cycles with minimal degradation, which is essential for long-duration energy storage applications on the grid. A notable feature of Jolt’s technology is its compatibility with existing vanadium redox flow battery infrastructures, allowing for seamless integration with minor modifications. This retrofit capability reduces adoption barriers and leverages existing manufacturing and deployment ecosystems, accelerating the transition to more sustainable energy storage solutions.

Recent Projects

In December 2024, Jolt Energy Storage Technologies successfully closed a $4 million Series A funding round. This capital infusion is earmarked to advance prototype development, facilitate extensive field testing, and scale up design and manufacturing capabilities for their organic flow batteries. This funding milestone positions Jolt to accelerate its path to commercialization. As part of its strategic growth, Jolt also appointed Andrii Varenikov as Senior Research Chemist in September 2024. This addition to their team aims to accelerate research efforts and enhance the long-term performance of their energy storage materials. The company anticipates completing and demonstrating a 3 kW, four-hour organic flow battery prototype by December 2025, marking a crucial step toward commercial deployment.

Investors

Jolt Energy Storage Technologies has attracted investment from various sources, indicating confidence in its innovative battery technology. The company successfully completed a $4 million Series A funding round in December 2024, with contributions from private investors. Early support also came from Shell’s GameChanger program, which participated in an Incubator/Accelerator round in 2020. Additionally, Jolt has received grants from the U.S. Department of Energy, supporting their clean energy development initiatives.
