LiBatt Recycling Ltd is positioned to become the UK’s first industrial-scale lithium-ion battery recycler. Established in 2021 as part of the Recyclus Group, the company develops sustainable end-to-end recycling solutions for lithium-ion batteries. Their mission focuses on increasing recycling efficiency, promoting resource sustainability, and supporting the transition to a net-zero carbon economy. Through innovative technologies and processes, LiBatt Recycling contributes to minimizing waste and reducing the environmental impact of battery disposal while recovering valuable materials for reuse in the supply chain.

Battery Technology

LiBatt Recycling specializes in processing various types of lithium-ion batteries, including those from electric vehicles, industrial applications, and consumer electronics. Their technology enables the recovery of essential materials such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, and manganese through advanced hydrometallurgical processes. The company’s recycling facility in Wolverhampton implements state-of-the-art separation and recovery methods to achieve maximum material recovery rates.

A notable technical advancement is their work on lithium thionyl chloride (LTC) battery recycling. This innovative process addresses a significant gap in the European market, as these batteries, commonly found in fire alarms and smart meters, currently lack established recycling methods. The company’s technology ensures safe handling and processing while maximizing the recovery of valuable materials.

The facility uses specially designed battery boxes that meet ADR regulations and incorporate fire protection measures for safe transportation and storage. This systematic approach enables LiBatt to process batteries efficiently while maintaining strict safety and environmental standards.

Recent Projects

In recent developments, LiBatt Recycling secured £100,000 in funding through the Clean Futures Accelerator Program, with half provided by the program and half matched by the company. This investment supports their pioneering work in LTC battery recycling. Additionally, the company reopened its Wolverhampton facility after implementing enhanced safety measures and opened a new laboratory suite to advance their recycling capabilities.

Investors

Technology Minerals PLC serves as the primary investor in LiBatt Recycling through its ownership of the Recyclus Group. Recent corporate developments include Technology Minerals’ agreement to increase its ownership of Recyclus from 48.35% to 100%, resulting in the vendors of Recyclus owning approximately 42% of the enlarged Technology Minerals company.
