Nissan and Stena Recycling have joined forces to optimize the reuse of second-life EV batteries in Norway. With over 80,000 Nissan LEAF vehicles on the roads, Nissan is pioneering a new value chain for batteries no longer suitable for driving.
The partnership combines Nissan’s EV expertise with Stena Recycling’s advanced reuse and recycling methods. Instead of dismantling entire batteries for raw materials, Stena Recycling carefully diagnoses each battery at its Ausenfjellet facility near Oslo, salvaging components for repair, repurposing, or integration into energy storage systems—extending their life by 10 to 15 years.
Nissan sees this collaboration as key to reducing the environmental footprint while advancing its goal of carbon neutrality by 2050. The agreement guarantees Stena Recycling a steady supply of used batteries from decommissioned vehicles, fueling a competitive circular business model that maximizes value.
Backed partly by Enova funding, the new facility underpins efforts to create a sustainable, circular economy. By safely localizing, transporting, dismantling, and repurposing batteries, the alliance supports the green transition and sets a new benchmark for sustainable resource use in the EV industry.
