Nyrstar’s battery-related technologies include a virtual battery system that balances grid demand using electrified production processes, a 100 MWh energy storage installation at the Balen, Belgium facility integrated with solar and wind parks, battery recycling operations at Port Pirie, Australia for recovery of cobalt, lithium, zinc, nickel, and copper, and traditional lead production for lead-acid batteries.
Primary metal products include zinc and lead for industrial applications. Energy solutions include their virtual battery system and large-scale battery installations (e.g., 100 MWh storage at Balen). Recycling services at Port Pirie for battery material recovery.
In 2024, Nyrstar implemented care and maintenance at Budel operations in the Netherlands and resumed limited production; is evaluating a germanium and gallium processing project at Clarksville, Tennessee, USA; and is advancing battery recycling expansion at the Port Pirie, Australia facility.
Since its acquisition in 2019, Trafigura has been the sole owner of Nyrstar’s operating business (100.0% ownership).
