OneD Battery Sciences, established in 2013 and based in Palo Alto, California, specializes in developing advanced silicon-based battery technologies for electric vehicles (EVs). The company’s primary innovation, the SINANODE technology platform, integrates silicon nanowires with EV-grade graphite to enhance battery performance significantly. This integration results in increased energy storage capacity, faster charging capabilities, and reduced production costs. With more than 240 granted patents, OneD Battery Sciences has positioned itself as a significant contributor to the EV battery industry, focusing on scalable solutions that advance the adoption of electric mobility.

Battery Technology

The SINANODE platform represents a significant advancement in battery anode technology. By incorporating silicon nanowires into EV-grade graphite, this innovation triples the energy density of traditional anodes while reducing costs per kilowatt-hour by half. The technology addresses common challenges associated with silicon in batteries, such as expansion during charging cycles and manufacturing complexity.

The manufacturing process is designed to integrate seamlessly with existing production methods, making it accessible for large-scale implementation. OneD’s approach allows battery manufacturers to maintain their current graphite supply chains while significantly improving performance metrics. The silicon nanowire technology enables faster charging times and extended range for EVs, addressing two primary concerns for electric vehicle adoption.

Through partnerships with material suppliers and battery manufacturers, OneD adapts its technology to specific technical requirements. The company’s collaboration with Koch Modular Process Systems facilitates large-scale production of silicon-graphite anode materials, utilizing Koch’s silane technology to complement the SINANODE platform.

Recent Projects

In July 2024, OneD Battery Sciences commissioned its SINANODE pilot production facility in Moses Lake, Washington. This facility can produce 100,000 kilograms of SINANODE material annually, sufficient for 10,000 battery packs. The company has also established a strategic partnership with Customcells to accelerate EV battery cell development and industrialization. OneD projects revenue to reach “double-digit millions” by 2025 and exceed $100 million by 2027-2028, following the activation of its first large-scale manufacturing facility.

Investors

OneD Battery Sciences maintains strong financial backing from several prominent investors. Pacific View Capital Partners, Raptor Group, and Toba Capital collectively own more than two-thirds of the company. Additional investors include GM Ventures, which actively participates in joint R&D efforts, and Volta Energy Technologies, which joined during the Series C funding round. The company’s board includes representatives from these investing partners, ensuring aligned strategic direction and industry expertise.
