Rivus Batteries, established in 2019 as a spin-off from Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden, specializes in developing organic flow battery technology for large-scale energy storage applications. The startup’s innovative approach replaces traditional metal-based components with organic materials, resulting in safer and more environmentally conscious energy storage systems. Battery Technology

Rivus Batteries’ primary innovation lies in its metal-free battery technology, which utilizes water-based organic electrolytes. These electrolytes are crafted from abundant organic materials, making them both cost-effective and environmentally sustainable. The company’s proprietary design ensures non-flammable and non-explosive characteristics, establishing a secure supply chain independent of rare battery metals.

The organic flow batteries developed by Rivus are specifically designed for long-duration energy storage (LDES), making them ideal for utility-scale applications. The technology stores energy in liquid electrolytes contained in external tanks, allowing for flexible storage capacities. This design enables efficient integration with renewable energy sources and provides stable power output when needed.

The batteries’ unique composition offers several advantages over conventional systems: they’re non-corrosive, maintenance-friendly, and have a longer operational lifespan compared to traditional lithium-ion batteries. Additionally, the organic materials used are easily synthesized, reducing production costs and environmental impact.

Recent Projects

In late 2024, Rivus Batteries secured €525,000 in funding to accelerate their technology deployment. The company plans to unveil its first full-scale prototype in the second half of 2024, followed by a broader market release in 2025. They are currently scaling up electrolyte production and preparing to install pilot batteries with customers.

The company has also joined the West Swedish Chemical and Material Cluster and the CEROF-project, strengthening their position in sustainable energy systems development.

Investors

Rivus Batteries has attracted investments from several notable organizations. xista science ventures, an Austrian deep-tech venture fund, and NAVCAP AB, a Swedish investment firm, have provided significant financial backing. EIT InnoEnergy, a leading European cleantech investor, continues to support the company’s growth through follow-up investments.

The Swedish Energy Agency has also backed Rivus through various projects, and the company participates in the Vinnova Deep Tech Accelerator Program, enhancing their development capabilities.
