Samsung SDI Hungary operates as a subsidiary of Samsung SDI Co., Ltd., a global leader in battery manufacturing and energy solutions. Located in Göd, Hungary, the facility specializes in producing high-performance batteries for electric vehicles (EVs). Since its establishment in 2017, the plant has become one of Europe’s significant battery production centers, with a monthly capacity of 8 million battery cells – sufficient to power approximately 50,000 electric vehicles annually. The facility exemplifies Samsung SDI’s commitment to advancing sustainable transportation through innovative battery solutions, while supporting the growing European EV market.

Battery Technology

Samsung SDI Hungary manufactures state-of-the-art prismatic battery cells, including the advanced P6 prismatic series. These cells feature high-nickel cathodes containing over 91% nickel content and silicon-carbon nanocomposite anodes with more than 10% silicon composition. This configuration delivers enhanced energy density and superior performance characteristics essential for modern electric vehicles.

The facility produces batteries under Samsung SDI’s PRiMX brand, which represents the company’s dedication to exceptional quality standards, outstanding performance metrics, and proven advantages in the EV sector. The manufacturing process incorporates advanced materials science and precise production techniques to ensure consistent quality and reliability.

The plant’s technical capabilities extend to both cell production and module assembly, enabling complete integration within the automotive battery supply chain. These modules are engineered to meet stringent performance and safety requirements for various electric vehicle applications, serving major automotive manufacturers across Europe.

Recent Projects

In late 2024, Samsung SDI Hungary initiated a significant expansion project valued at 390 billion forint ($1.29 billion). This investment aims to increase production capacity more than fourfold through the addition of approximately twelve new production lines. The company also launched a substantial R&D investment of €61.9 million, creating 25 new specialized positions.

A notable achievement includes securing a long-term supply agreement with Hyundai Motor for prismatic batteries, scheduled to begin production in 2026. These batteries will power Hyundai’s European electric vehicle fleet through 2032.

Investors

Samsung SDI’s ownership structure includes Samsung Electronics as the primary stakeholder with 19.58% ownership. Other significant investors include the National Pension Service holding 7.47% and BlackRock with 5.01%. The Samsung Foundation of Culture and Samsung Welfare Foundation maintain smaller stakes of 0.58% and 0.25% respectively.
