SERI Industrial S.p.A. is an established Italian industrial group that began operations in 1999. Headquartered in San Potito Sannitico, Italy, the company operates globally through its subsidiaries and business units. SERI Industrial focuses on energy storage solutions, with expertise spanning the battery value chain and a commitment to integrating circular economy principles. The company is structured as a holding company, managing diversified operations that include the production and recycling of advanced batteries, plant engineering for battery manufacturing facilities, and the recycling and production of plastic materials. SERI Industrial also plays a role in electric vehicle manufacturing through its subsidiary, Industria Italiana Autobus, a producer of electric buses.
Battery Technology
SERI Industrial’s battery technologies encompass both lithium-ion and lead-acid chemistries. Within lithium-ion, their primary focus is on Lithium-Iron-Phosphate (LFP) cells. The Teverola 1 plant currently produces pouch-format LFP cells, while the expanded Teverola 2 gigafactory aims for significant production of prismatic LFP cells. The company maintains expertise in manufacturing lead-acid batteries for various applications, including industrial traction and stationary storage. Beyond current production, SERI Industrial is actively engaged in research and development for emerging battery technologies, including solid-state and sodium-ion batteries, which hold promise for future electric vehicle and energy storage applications.
A significant aspect of SERI Industrial’s operations is its advanced recycling technologies. This includes dedicated lines for both lead-acid and lithium batteries. A pilot lithium battery recycling plant processes spent lithium batteries, recovering active materials. This focus on recycling aligns with the company’s commitment to a circular economy, minimizing reliance on virgin raw materials and promoting sustainable resource management within the battery industry.
Recent Projects
In October 2024, SERI Industrial and Eni formed a strategic agreement to develop battery manufacturing and recycling facilities, with a focus on stationary energy storage and advanced active material production in Brindisi, Italy. A key initiative is the expansion of the Teverola gigafactory, with subsidiariy FIB S.p.A. launching the Teverola 2 plant, targeting 8 GWh/year for prismatic LFP cells. This project is a part of the European IPCEI Batteries initiative, contributing to European battery supply autonomy. The Teverola 2 expansion secured €150 million in financing, supported by Italy’s SACE Archimede guarantee and major banking partners.
