Thorion Energy is an Australian company based in Perth, Western Australia, and is recognized as the nation’s first manufacturer of Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries (VRFBs). The company specializes in advanced energy storage solutions, utilizing an exclusive, patented chloride-based vanadium electrolyte technology. This technology is licensed from the US Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL). Thorion focuses on delivering safe, scalable, and long-duration electricity storage systems designed to support the global energy transition, particularly the integration of renewable energy sources.
The company’s approach to energy storage addresses important market demands by offering a dependable and environmentally sound alternative to traditional battery technologies. Thorion’s commitment to innovation and sustainable practices positions it as an important contributor to the future of energy storage solutions, both in Australia and internationally.
Battery Technology
Thorion Energy’s core technology centers on its proprietary V-Series battery modules, which include models like the V40 and V80. These batteries are distinguished by their use of a patented chloride-based, mixed-acid vanadium electrolyte. This offers advantages over conventional sulfuric acid-based VRFBs. Thorion is one of only three global licensees of this technology, and the sole non-US licensee.
Key features of this chloride-based electrolyte technology include a higher energy density, providing up to 70% more kilowatt-hours per liter compared to traditional VRFBs. This results in reduced system size and volume. The technology also allows for an extended operating temperature range, functioning from -5ºC to 60ºC, which expands deployment possibilities to extreme climates. Additionally, the electrolyte supports an ultra-long lifecycle, maintaining performance for over 20 years with multiple daily cycles. Thorion’s VRFBs are non-flammable and not prone to thermal runaway, offering safety benefits over other battery chemistries. The modular design of the V-Series modules allows for flexible system sizing, suitable for standalone power stations and larger microgrid setups.
Recent Projects
In early 2025, Thorion Energy expanded its international reach through agreements with a Vietnamese company, extending commercial access to Vietnam, India, and the Middle East. Its VRFB modules are being exported globally and have replaced diesel generators in remote Australian mining sites. These installations have validated the performance and safety of Thorion’s VRFBs. The systems, designed as modular “mini power stations,” are built for rapid deployment in challenging climates, including cyclone-prone areas, without extensive infrastructure needs.
Investors
Thorion Energy has attracted support from various investors. Pioneer investor Lawrence and co-founders Bradley Appleyard (CEO) and Martin Law (Director) provided initial leadership and investment. Richmond Vanadium Technology (RVT) made a AUD 3 million investment in 2023, securing an equity stake and contributing to governance. Thorion Energy is an unlisted public company and is seeking an additional AUD 6–10 million through equity or convertible notes to scale operations, expand inventory for battery leasing, and enhance commercial rollout.
