Vianode develops and manufactures sustainable synthetic anode graphite for lithium-ion batteries, primarily serving the electric vehicle (EV) industry. Founded in 2021, the company operates with a clear mission to drive the battery industry toward net-zero emissions through advanced material solutions. Their innovative approach to production combines proprietary closed furnace technology with green energy sources, resulting in significantly reduced environmental impact compared to traditional manufacturing methods. With facilities across Norway and expansion plans in North America, Vianode is establishing itself as an essential provider of sustainable battery materials for the growing EV market.

Battery Technology

Vianode’s core technology centers on producing high-performance synthetic anode graphite, a critical component in lithium-ion batteries. Their proprietary manufacturing process achieves a carbon footprint of just 1.9 kg CO2 equivalents per kilogram of graphite, compared to the industry average of 20 kg CO2/kg. This significant reduction is achieved through closed furnace technology and renewable energy integration.

The company’s anode materials are specifically engineered to enhance battery performance metrics, including charging speed, range, and longevity. Their production method not only minimizes energy consumption but also maintains strict quality standards required for EV applications. By 2030, Vianode aims to further reduce its carbon footprint to 1 kg CO2/kg while scaling production to supply materials for 3 million EVs annually.

The company also develops silicon-graphite composite materials, representing the next generation of anode technology. These advanced materials promise increased energy density and improved battery performance, supporting the evolution of EV capabilities.

Recent Projects

In January 2023, Vianode secured a multi-billion dollar supply agreement with General Motors for EV battery-grade anode graphite. October 2023 marked the inauguration of “Via ONE,” their sustainable anode graphite plant in Norway. The facility represents a significant milestone in environmentally responsible battery material production.

The company also welcomed Wenqing Su as Chief Project Officer in 2023, strengthening their leadership team for large-scale project execution. Additionally, Vianode established new industry benchmarks for low-carbon anode graphite materials and received 90 million EUR from the EU Innovation Fund to support their expansion initiatives.

Investors

Vianode’s ownership structure includes three major stakeholders: Elkem holds 40% ownership, Altor Equity Partners approximately 40.1%, and Hydro maintains 19.9% following a recent stake adjustment in October 2024. This combination of industrial and financial investors provides Vianode with both technical expertise and financial resources to execute their growth strategy.
