Chinese automaker BYD has won a new 2.6 GWh energy storage contract for a clean energy project in Chile, marking progress for its global energy storage business. The company will supply 468 MC Cube-T energy storage systems to the Central Oasis solar-plus-storage project in central Chile under a partnership with Spanish renewable energy firm Grenergy, according to a March 27 statement. The project comprises four integrated solar and storage stations—Gran Teno, Tamango, Planchón and Monte Águila—that will serve as key nodes in the regional power network.
The Central Oasis initiative features 4 GWh of total energy storage capacity and 1.1 GW of photovoltaic installations, with an estimated investment of roughly $900 million. The development is scheduled to reach full operation between 2026 and 2027 and is designed to replicate the integrated solar-and-storage model used in Grenergy’s Oasis Atacama project. BYD and Grenergy have a history of collaboration in Latin America; in May 2025, the firms agreed to deliver 3.5 GWh of energy storage systems for the sixth phase of the Oasis Atacama project in northern Chile.
For the Central Oasis project, BYD has already shipped 168 MC Cube-T units destined for the Gran Teno station, with delivery expected by mid-April. The Gran Teno facility is projected to be connected to the grid in the second quarter of this year, indicating that initial milestones are on schedule. Remaining equipment will be dispatched in a coordinated sequence over the coming months.
BYD’s energy storage operations have expanded rapidly, with cumulative global shipments surpassing 135 GWh by the end of 2025. The company’s systems are now deployed in over 110 countries and regions, across more than 650 projects.
