Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) announced on October 13, 2026, that it participated in the Global Battery Alliance’s (GBA) Battery Passport pilot program for a third consecutive wave. According to CATL, it is the only battery company to have battery passports published across all GBA pilot waves.
The program is intended to establish a standardized methodology for monitoring, quantifying and verifying the environmental, social and governance performance of batteries throughout their lifecycle. It provides a common framework for sustainability data and disclosures across the battery value chain.
The 2026 pilot included cell manufacturers representing nearly 80% of global production capacity. CATL said its participating battery product provided ESG data coverage across the full value chain, including mining, refining, materials, cells and battery packs.
CATL first participated in the initiative in January 2023, when the GBA published its first Battery Passport proof of concept. During the second pilot wave, the company applied for separate battery passports for its Shenxing battery and cell-to-pack battery. Those pilot results were validated by an independent third party and released publicly.
The GBA is preparing to make its Battery Passport certification scheme fully available in early 2027, moving the initiative from operational trials toward broader implementation. The organization expects verified sustainability performance to become a differentiating factor in global battery markets.
CATL also said it has achieved carbon neutrality across its core operations and met its 2025 milestone as scheduled. The company is now working toward its goal of full value-chain carbon neutrality by 2035 and plans to continue supporting the development and implementation of sustainability standards for the new energy industry.
