Eni Storage Systems Launches Brindisi LFP Battery Hub

Eni Storage Systems, a 50-50 JV of Eni and Fib, has begun engineering for its Brindisi facility to yield over 8 GWh/year of LFP cells via a water-based process, integrating cathode production and BESS assembly.

Eni Storage Systems, a joint venture equally owned by Eni and Fib (a subsidiary of Seri Industrial), has launched operations in the Brindisi industrial area to develop a facility for stationary lithium-ion batteries. The new hub is designed to produce more than 8 gigawatt-hours per year of lithium-iron-phosphate cells using a water-based manufacturing process. Currently in the engineering phase, the project is undergoing economic, financial and permitting reviews, which are expected to conclude by the first quarter of 2026 before construction begins.

First announced on October 25, 2024, the Brindisi initiative is part of Eni’s broader industrial transformation strategy, which emphasizes environmental, social and economic sustainability. The partnership with Seri Industrial builds on an integrated approach to managing the Brindisi site, complementing Fib’s separate battery plant under construction in Teverola, in the province of Caserta.

At Brindisi, activities will include the production of cathode active material—lithium-iron-phosphate that facilitates lithium-ion movement during charge and discharge—and the assembly of those cells into Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). The BESS units will serve local grid-scale applications and support operations at both the Brindisi and Teverola facilities. By co-locating cathode production and battery assembly, the joint venture aims to optimize supply-chain integration and reduce environmental impact.

Looking ahead, the Brindisi site will incorporate battery recycling capabilities, enabling circular use of materials and supporting third-party operators in the sector. Eni and Seri Industrial have set a target to secure over 10% of the European stationary storage market through this combined Brindisi-Teverola hub. The integrated approach is intended to strengthen regional energy security, drive the energy transition and promote sustainable industrial growth in southern Italy.
