Global electric vehicle (EV) sales reached 2 million units in June 2026, pushing year-to-date sales to 9.6 million, according to Benchmark Mineral Intelligence. This represents a 7% increase year over year and an 11% rise from May. However, growth is uneven across regions. Europe continues to lead, while North American sales have slipped and China’s domestic market has cooled, prompting automakers to focus on exports.

Europe recorded its strongest month for EV sales in June, with 530,000 units sold, a 31% increase from June 2025 and a 28% rise month over month. Governments’ purchase incentives, elevated fuel prices and a surge of new, more affordable EV models are driving this momentum. Several European nations—including France, Denmark, Spain and Portugal—set new monthly sales records. In France, homegrown brands held sway, with one major automaker claiming 20% of the market. New compact models from several manufacturers are arriving at competitive price points, addressing a longstanding gap in the European market for cost-effective EV options.

In North America, sales declined for the sixth consecutive month following the expiration of the US federal EV tax credit last September. Regional sales totaled 130,000 units in June, down 13% year over year and contributing to a 20% decline in year-to-date volumes. Both of the region’s leading automakers reported steeper drops in all-electric vehicle deliveries as they reassess their EV strategies.

China saw 1 million EVs sold in June, an 11% decline from June 2025 and a 14% drop year to date. In response, Chinese manufacturers exported nearly 500,000 new energy vehicles in June, setting a monthly record. Exports to Europe—particularly of plug-in hybrids—remain a key focus, even as the European Union considers extending tariffs to these models.

Overall, global sales are up 2% through June, with regions outside China, Europe and North America posting a 98% increase. The data underscore Europe’s accelerating lead, China’s growing export orientation and North America’s challenges following policy changes.
