Beltsville, Md., March 10, 2026 – Ion Storage Systems announced the successful customer qualification of its Cornerstone™ solid-state battery cell performance, making it the first U.S. company in the sector to meet rigorous customer standards. Following the distribution of sample cells to leading industrial, consumer electronics and automotive partners, Ion has validated that its Cornerstone cells deliver the expected performance metrics under real-world conditions.

Jorge Diaz Schneider, chief executive officer of Ion Storage Systems, described the milestone as “a defining moment for both Ion and the solid-state battery industry.” He noted that production of Cornerstone cells is set to begin in Maryland later this year, with plans to expand capacity as demand grows. “We look forward to engaging additional customers and supporting innovation beyond the limitations of traditional lithium-ion batteries,” he said.

Dr. Greg Hitz, chief technology officer, emphasized the significance of transitioning a solid-state, anodeless battery from the laboratory to commercial application. “Delivering a complete solution that meets our customers’ requirements underscores the strength of our technology,” he said. “Our cells combine high-temperature stability with exceptional performance characteristics, a combination unique in today’s battery market.”

Ion’s strategy focuses on applications where its technology brings immediate value, such as specialty devices and high-value industrial uses, before addressing larger markets like electric vehicles. To meet its initial orders, production will be handled at the company’s Beltsville, Maryland facility, which is currently being expanded. A new sintering furnace is scheduled for installation in 2026 to support ramp-up. Planning is also underway for offsite, scaled-production facilities to accommodate anticipated future demand.
