Mercedes-Benz Trucks has added the CB400 high-voltage reworked battery to its genuine spare parts portfolio for first-generation eActros 300/400 and eEconic models. The reworked battery offers an economical alternative to new replacements, delivering like-new performance, verified safety, and full functionality while extending battery life and reducing environmental impact. This initiative aligns with Daimler Truck’s circular economy and sustainability objectives by conserving resources and cutting CO₂e emissions by roughly one-third compared to new production.

Development of the CB400 reworked battery takes place at the Kompetenzzentrum für emissionsfreie Mobilität (KEM) in Mannheim, adjacent to series production facilities. Collected from customer vehicles, used CB400 units are disassembled, meticulously cleaned, and refurbished to the latest series standards. Batteries deemed unsuitable for refurbishment enter a dedicated recycling stream, and those that remain functional can later serve in second-life applications such as stationary energy storage.

Each reworked battery meets Mercedes-Benz Trucks’ series specifications for functionality and safety. Every unit is updated with the current software version and undergoes comprehensive functional and leak testing. The standard Mercedes-Benz Trucks parts warranty covers these reworked batteries, which are offered in multiple performance levels to ensure compatibility with existing vehicle battery packs.

Beyond addressing current repair and maintenance needs, the CB400 project lays the groundwork for future battery exchange programs. Insights gained from this effort are already informing development of the next-generation CEB500 battery for the eActros 600. Although series production of first-generation eActros models will conclude by year-end, demand for reliable, cost-effective spare parts persists, and the CB400 remains available for the eEconic lineup.

What began as a student initiative in 2021 has evolved into an interdisciplinary innovation blueprint for the commercial vehicle sector. Its proximity to Daimler Truck’s Battery Technology Center in Mannheim ensures rapid integration of learnings into new battery platforms, reinforcing the company’s commitment to a circular economy and the broader decarbonization of transport.
