India’s largest integrated lithium-ion battery gigafactory is set to be established in Andhra Pradesh, following approval by the state’s Investment Promotion Board, led by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu. The project, proposed by Waaree Energies, will be located at Rambilli in Anakapalli district and entails an investment of INR 8,175 crore. It is projected to create around 3,000 direct jobs and strengthen the country’s clean-energy manufacturing capability.
The greenfield facility will have an annual production capacity of 16 GWh and will encompass the full battery value chain, including cell production, battery pack assembly, and the development of large-scale battery energy storage systems. This integrated approach aims to reduce import dependence and bolster domestic manufacturing in a strategically important sector.
According to the Investment Promotion Board, the project aligns with Andhra Pradesh’s Integrated Clean Energy Policy, which promotes a comprehensive clean-energy ecosystem covering power generation, equipment manufacturing, and energy storage. The policy has already attracted significant investments in renewable power and solar manufacturing, and the planned gigafactory represents a key step toward enhancing advanced energy storage capabilities.
In the same board meeting, officials approved 27 additional projects with a combined investment of INR 29,021 crore. Chief Minister Naidu underscored the importance of the state’s Speed of Doing Business policy for all industrial initiatives and urged officials to streamline processes for forthcoming mega-scale ventures by global firms.
A ministerial committee will oversee land allocations and has the authority to cancel approvals if work does not commence. The government also highlighted plans to develop large-scale electric vehicle charging infrastructure in Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, and Tirupati, and is considering special incentives to attract semiconductor investments and support projects on privately owned land.
Beyond energy, the state government is pursuing value-addition in aquaculture, dairy, poultry, livestock, and meat exports. Tourism development is also on the agenda, with dedicated plans for regions around Visakhapatnam, Amaravati, and Tirupati, organizing clusters such as Suryalanka, Polavaram, and Horsley Hills to enhance visitor facilities.
