Orbia Fluor & Energy Materials has completed the second and final phase of its Custom Electrolyte facility expansion in Madison, Wisconsin, boosting production capacity by roughly 300 percent. The upgrade, finalized in early December 2025, added a second 75-liter mixer and a new 200-liter mixer, bringing the site to full operational status.
Originally opened in August 2024, the Madison facility was established to provide domestically sourced small- and medium-batch battery electrolytes tailored to precise customer specifications. In addition to conventional lithium-ion formulations, the plant supports emerging chemistries such as lithium-sulfur and sodium-ion. Since its launch, the site has supplied electrolytes to hundreds of companies worldwide across industrial, medical, energy storage, electric vehicle, Department of Defense, lab-scale, and aerospace sectors.
With its four-week or less lead time for most common formulations, the facility leverages its proximity to Chicago to ensure efficient logistics and responsive service to both domestic and international markets. Local production reduces dependence on overseas suppliers, mitigating lengthy freight delays, extending product shelf life, lowering the risk of excess and obsolete inventories, and strengthening overall supply chain resilience.
According to Avicenne Energy, the global battery electrolyte market was valued at US $9.5 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach US $22 billion by 2030. The expanded capacity will enable Orbia Fluor & Energy Materials to meet growing demand and accelerate innovation in electrolyte development.
Carl Thoemmes, Business Development Director, Orbia Fluor & Energy Materials, says: “This expansion represents a significant step forward in our commitment to advancing the global energy transition. By tripling our production capacity, we’re not only meeting the surging demand for battery electrolytes, we are developing a more robust supply chain and creating more opportunities for innovation and collaboration.”
Thoemmes added, “With advanced capabilities and faster lead times, our plant empowers the battery industry to accelerate the journey from concept to commercialization, all while cutting the carbon footprint associated with importing electrolytes and driving the next generation of sustainable technologies.”
