Skeleton Technologies has been awarded a nearly €7 million business grant from the North Savo ELY Centre to support its SuperBattery production facility in Varkaus. This grant represents the largest single allocation of more than €42 million distributed this year for business and rural development by the Centre.

The Varkaus factory project was launched in 2023 after Skeleton Technologies acquired the assets of European Battery Technologies Oy’s bankruptcy estate and signed a lease for a 9,400 m² facility in the Keski-Savo Industrial Park.

Skeleton’s CEO Taavi Madiberk said at the time of the acquisition: “We are investing to ramp-up our manufacturing capacity in Finland. Finland is an excellent addition for rapid prototyping and expanding our piloting capabilities significantly. It will support our existing manufacturing sites and will allow us to initiate the pilot production of our next generation products.”

Official SuperBattery production began last year, following several months of testing and pilot operations led by battery expert Dr. Kai Vuorilehto. With the support of the local workforce and streamlined collaboration with regional authorities, the plant has steadily increased its output and accelerated development cycles for its energy storage systems.

COO Timo Koljonen, who brings 25 years of experience in operational management and design from previous roles at Danfoss Power Solutions, Visedo Oy, and Elfys Oy, oversees day-to-day operations in Varkaus.

Koljonen notes: “The Varkaus factory has enabled us to produce prototypes quickly and significantly expand SuperBattery pilot capabilities. We are very satisfied with the local workforce’s skills and the cooperation with authorities. We can now scale production and meet growing demand.”

Beyond boosting production capacity and employment, the grant aligns with Finland’s climate objectives to reduce emissions and achieve carbon neutrality by 2035. Skeleton Technologies’ SuperBattery solutions are designed to support emissions reductions across industrial, transportation, and energy sectors.

In addition to Varkaus, the company opened a research and development unit at LUT University in Lappeenranta in 2024, reinforcing its commitment to developing sustainable energy storage technologies in Finland.
