Škoda Auto has officially opened a new battery systems assembly hall at its main plant in Mladá Boleslav, marking its emergence as the Volkswagen Group’s largest manufacturer of battery systems for battery-electric vehicles. The €205 million investment, delivered in under one year, adds a 55,000 m² production facility capable of assembling a battery system every 60 seconds. This equates to more than 1,100 systems per day and up to 335,000 units annually.

As the first Volkswagen Group site in Europe to integrate cell-to-pack technology for high-volume electric vehicles, the hall operates with approximately 84 percent automation, employs 131 industrial robots, and leverages standardized cells and LFP chemistry. Škoda reports a 30 percent reduction in battery product costs compared with current MEB-based systems. Close collaboration with the Volkswagen Group Technology Centre of Excellence Battery is designed to accelerate the rollout of advanced battery innovations and reinforce local supply chains.

Since beginning battery-system production in 2019, Škoda has delivered around 1.4 million systems. The new facility reflects the company’s strategy to onshore critical components, secure technology access, and support electrified drivetrains across Volkswagen, Škoda, and other group brands. To staff the expansion, Škoda has retrained or newly hired about 600 employees, underpinning its long-term commitment to the Czech Republic as a European automotive manufacturing hub.

In parallel with scaling battery output, Škoda is advancing broader sustainability measures. The company is converting its central power plant from coal to biomass, targeting a reduction of roughly 274,000 tonnes of CO₂ by 2027. Škoda also plans to double its all-electric vehicle portfolio in 2026, with new models aimed at both entry-level and premium segments, and increase annual electric vehicle production capacity to 200,000 units.

The hall’s inauguration was attended by Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš, Minister of Industry and Trade Karel Havlíček, and senior representatives from Škoda Auto and Volkswagen Group.
