Svolt Energy intends to begin large-scale production of its hybrid solid-liquid batteries by September. According to CEO Yang Hongxin, costs will align with those of conventional liquid lithium-ion cells.

The company’s hybrid batteries combine liquid and solid electrolytes, aiming to deliver enhanced safety compared to standard liquid-based systems. They are positioned as an interim solution until fully solid-state technology reaches mass-production viability.

Yang stated in a video announcement that full solid-state battery commercialization remains distant due to remaining technical hurdles. As a result, hybrid solid-liquid designs will dominate the market through 2026, when they are expected to see widespread deployment. The plan includes equipping several vehicle models with the new batteries by the end of September and ramping up production of a 100 kWh format to large-volume manufacturing levels.

China’s battery industry has recently standardized terminology, referring to semi-solid-state solutions as hybrid solid-liquid batteries to distinguish them from fully solid-state variants. Hybrid cells transfer ions via both solid and liquid electrolytes, whereas solid-state cells rely exclusively on solid materials for ion transport.

While leading battery manufacturers are targeting small-batch all-solid-state battery production around 2027, hybrid designs offer a nearer-term route to improved performance and safety. For comparison, leading firms account for larger shares, with one major manufacturer holding over 45% and another around 17% of April installations.

Established in 2012 as a battery research arm of a major automaker, Svolt spun off in early 2018 to concentrate on next-generation cell materials, modules, packs, battery management systems and energy storage technologies. In April, Svolt reported installations of 1.14 GWh in China, capturing a 1.83% market share and ranking tenth in the domestic EV battery market, according to data from the China Automotive Battery Innovation Alliance.
