TerraFlow Energy is developing a 9.6 MW, 5-hour vanadium flow battery installation in Bellville, Texas, representing one of the state’s largest long-duration energy storage projects of its kind. With a total capacity of 48 MWh, the system employs TerraFlow’s large-tank flow battery design, which prioritizes safety, stability, and longevity. Unlike lithium-ion solutions, the vanadium chemistry used in this project is non-flammable and poses no risk of thermal runaway—an important consideration for communities evaluating energy storage safety.
The Bellville system is engineered to deliver reliable, multi-hour power to manage fluctuations in grid supply and support local infrastructure without the high maintenance demands typical of other technologies. To streamline capital requirements and secure a steady source of high-quality vanadium electrolyte, TerraFlow’s customer entered into a lease agreement with Storion Energy. Under this arrangement, Storion acts as safekeeper of vanadium units provided by Largo Physical Vanadium (LPV) and manages the unique electrolyte-leasing model that underpins the project’s long-term supply chain.
“This project validates not just our technology, but our model,” said Jon Parrella, Founder and CEO of TerraFlow Energy. “Through our partnership with Storion, we helped our customer secure a lease-backed supply of vanadium that lowered upfront costs and streamlined delivery. It’s a structure we can replicate for AI data centers, bitcoin miners, utilities, and other energy-intensive customers looking to deploy long-duration storage at scale.”
Initial energization of the Bellville facility is anticipated in the first quarter of 2027. All TerraFlow systems are assembled in the United States, offering developers a scalable alternative to lithium-ion batteries for applications that demand extended discharge and stable operation over decades.
“We’re proud to support this project and partner with TerraFlow,” said Travis Torrey, Chief Technology Officer of Storion Energy. “Our company’s focus is to provide a cost-effective, domestic supply chain to enable the rapid adoption of vanadium flow battery solutions. This lease demonstrates how the right commercial structure can speed up deployment, reduce capital barriers, and provide reliable access to high-quality vanadium electrolyte.”
