Tianmu Lake Institute of Advanced Energy Storage Technologies (TIES), a partner to Nio, has introduced two new large-format liquid-solid-state battery cells with capacities of 314 Ah and 588 Ah. The unveiling took place at the 2026 Tianmu Lake New Electrochemical Energy Storage Technology Seminar, co-hosted by TIES and the China Green Development Group. The institute was co-founded by the lead developer of the 150 kWh WeLion battery pack used in Nio’s electric vehicles.
The cells employ an in-situ solidification process that transforms a portion of the liquid electrolyte into a stable solid matrix inside the cell casing. This approach is designed to combine the high energy density of traditional liquid lithium-ion cells with enhanced safety characteristics more typical of solid-state batteries.
Both cell formats utilize a lithium-iron phosphate and carbon chemistry. The 314 Ah variant is positioned for standard utility-scale applications, while the 588 Ah version targets long-duration energy systems that require extended discharge windows. By scaling up the cell footprint, TIES aims to increase energy storage capacity for electric vehicles and stationary storage alike.
New regulations set to take effect July 1 define cells containing 5% to 20% liquid content as liquid-solid-state architectures. This classification allows existing liquid cell production lines to convert to liquid-solid-state manufacturing with less than 10% equipment modification, enabling a faster and more cost-effective deployment compared to fully solid-state platforms.
TIES has also secured a strategic supply agreement with the Yellow River Delta Jinbo Chemical Research Institute to ensure a stable supply of raw materials. In parallel, the institute launched a specialized evaluation solution to streamline quality control across electrolyte and membrane production. These measures support the scaling of local pilot lines into larger-scale manufacturing operations.
The announcement underscores the ability of agile joint ventures to advance high-capacity battery solutions while some industry leaders continue to progress through earlier stages of solid-state development. By leveraging flexible manufacturing adaptations and strategic partnerships, TIES plans to accelerate the commercial rollout of these liquid-solid-state cells.
