Company Overview

Founded in 2017 and headquartered in Lancashire, United Kingdom, LiNa Energy develops solid-state sodium batteries to provide safer, more sustainable, and cost-effective energy storage solutions, eliminating reliance on lithium and cobalt and targeting applications in grid stability, industrial storage, and electric vehicles.

Battery Technology

LiNa Energy’s core technology is a solid-state sodium-metal-chloride (Na-MTL-Cl) battery that uses an ultra-thin sodium-conducting ceramic electrolyte to eliminate flammable solvents. The chemistry leverages abundant sodium and iron, reducing environmental and ethical concerns, with production cost projections below $50/kWh at scale. In partnership with Comau, the company has developed a scalable automated manufacturing line featuring an oxygen-free dry box and high-speed robotics.

Products

Modular solid-state sodium battery systems designed for grid-scale and industrial energy storage, offering Dynamic Containment services. A 10 kWh sodium-based Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) has been deployed, showcasing rapid frequency response and cost efficiency.

Recent Projects

Collaborated with Lancaster University and the Centre for Process Innovation; secured €4 million (including a €952,000 Innovate UK grant) to build an automated solid-state electrolyte pilot line; deployed a 10 kWh sodium-based BESS on the Indian grid; initiated pilot projects in Europe and the Middle East.

Investors

Raised $15.9M to date from Jacob Wolff-Petersen, Innovate UK (Future Enterprise Investor Partnership grant), Halliburton Labs, Rice Alliance Clean Energy Accelerator, and the UK Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (Energy Entrepreneurs Fund).
