Company Overview

XL Batteries is a technology company focused on developing and deploying safe, low-cost, and reliable grid-scale battery storage solutions. Founded in 2019 by scientists from Columbia University, the company is headquartered in Marlborough, Massachusetts. XL Batteries emerged from research that identified a unique organic chemistry with significant potential for grid-scale energy storage. The company aims to facilitate the global transition to renewable energy by providing durable and affordable energy storage systems designed to meet diverse power needs. With a mission centered on carbon neutrality and a commitment to sustainability, XL Batteries is working to establish a global presence in the energy storage market.

Battery Technology

XL Batteries specializes in Organic Flow Battery technology for long-duration energy storage applications. It uses a patented pH-neutral organic electrolyte chemistry in a flow battery architecture with fluid storage tanks and a 40-foot container unit. The system offers near 100% electrochemical efficiency, a modular and scalable design (capacity via tank size, power via container units), a lifespan exceeding 20 years, nonflammable electrolytes, and commodity chemical-based materials, reducing reliance on metals like lithium, cobalt, and nickel.

Products

A modular Organic Flow Battery system comprising fluid storage tanks paired with 40-foot container units housing proprietary components and pH-neutral organic electrolytes. Features include scalable capacity and power, near 100% efficiency, >20-year lifespan, and enhanced safety with nonflammable, commodity-based materials.

Recent Projects

In 2025, XL Batteries launched its first grid-scale Organic Flow Battery project. The initial pilot was commissioned in 2025 at Stolthaven Terminals’ Houston facility, demonstrating the system’s safety, reliability, and cost-effectiveness in a real-world industrial setting.

Investors

XL Batteries has raised approximately $16.2M to date, including a $10M Seed-2 round in 2023 led by Catalus Capital, with participation from SIP Global Partners and Xerox Ventures.
