Imerys British Lithium Limited (IBL) represents a significant development in the UK’s battery materials sector. Established in 2023, the company combines Imerys’ extensive mineral resources and infrastructure with innovative lithium processing technology. As the first integrated producer of battery-grade lithium carbonate in the United Kingdom, IBL operates from its base in Cornwall, focusing on sustainable lithium extraction from local granite deposits. The company’s production goals aim to support approximately 500,000 electric vehicles annually by the end of this decade, utilizing a mineral resource of 161 million tonnes at 0.54% lithium oxide grade.

Battery Technology

IBL’s technological approach centers on producing high-purity lithium carbonate through an environmentally conscious process. The company utilizes proprietary Mi-Sep and Li-Sep methods, which concentrate lithium mica without chemical additives. This innovative extraction process operates entirely on renewable energy sources, minimizing environmental impact while maintaining high production standards.

The processing facility incorporates advanced beneficiation techniques and conversion units, creating a complete production chain from raw material to battery-grade lithium carbonate. This integrated approach ensures quality control throughout the manufacturing process. The facility’s design allows for an annual production capacity of 20,000 tonnes of lithium carbonate equivalent, meeting the strict specifications required for electric vehicle batteries.

The company’s extraction method specifically targets mica granite, utilizing specialized techniques that maximize resource efficiency while adhering to the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA) Standard. This commitment to sustainable practices positions IBL as an essential contributor to the European battery supply chain.

Recent Projects

In November 2024, Imerys acquired complete ownership of IBL by purchasing all remaining minority interests, strengthening its position in the European lithium market. The company currently operates a pilot plant in Cornwall, demonstrating the effectiveness of its lithium carbonate production process. These developments represent significant progress toward establishing a domestic supply chain for critical battery materials in the UK.

Investors

The primary investor in IBL is Imerys, which now holds 100% ownership following its November 2024 acquisition. Prior to this, the company received support from various sources, including government backing through Innovate UK and the Automotive Transformation Fund. These investments have been instrumental in developing the company’s extraction technologies and infrastructure in Cornwall.
