Nexeon Ltd is a global leader in silicon anode materials for lithium-ion batteries, established in 2006 as a spin-off from Imperial College London. The company develops advanced materials that enhance battery performance by replacing traditional graphite anodes with silicon-based alternatives. This technology enables significant improvements in energy density, making batteries smaller and more efficient while reducing their environmental impact. Operating from its base in Oxfordshire, UK, with additional facilities in Japan and South Korea, Nexeon serves industries ranging from electric vehicles to consumer electronics and medical devices.

Battery Technology

Nexeon’s proprietary NSP2TM technology represents a significant advancement in battery material science. The company’s silicon-based anode materials increase battery energy density by up to 50% compared to conventional graphite anodes, while requiring only half the volume to deliver equivalent performance. This enhancement translates to extended range for electric vehicles – between 20% to 40% improvement – and more efficient operation in various applications.

The manufacturing process integrates seamlessly with existing battery production lines, eliminating the need for additional equipment investment. This “drop-in” capability makes adoption straightforward for manufacturers. The silicon anode materials also support rapid charging capabilities and maintain stability throughout numerous charge-discharge cycles, addressing previous limitations of silicon in battery applications.

Nexeon’s materials undergo careful engineering to manage the expansion and contraction that typically occurs with silicon anodes during charging cycles. This technical achievement ensures long-term battery performance while maintaining the advantages of increased energy density.

Recent Projects

In early 2024, Nexeon initiated construction of its first commercial-scale production facility in Gunsan, South Korea. The plant, scheduled to begin operations in early 2025, will produce 1,500 tonnes of NSP2 material annually. A strategic partnership with OCI ensures cost-effective supply of silane through a dedicated pipeline system. The company also secured a binding supply agreement with Panasonic for their Kansas gigafactory, marking a significant step in commercial expansion.

Investors

Nexeon’s development has been supported by several prominent investors, including SKC Co. Ltd, SJL Partners, BNW Investment, and Kiwoom Private Equity. Additional backing comes from Daishin Private Equity, Shinhan Investments, and Ingevity Corporation. Wacker Chemie AG maintains a significant ownership stake, while Nex UK Holdings Limited and HPso SPV Ltd are major shareholders. This diverse investor base provides strong financial support for Nexeon’s growth initiatives.
