Redox One is a spin-off from Tharisa PLC founded in 2022, focused on developing Iron-Chromium Redox Flow Battery systems designed for multi-hour to multi-day energy storage applications. Legally headquartered in Paphos, Cyprus, with engineering and operations based in Dortmund, Germany, and electrolyte manufacturing in South Africa, Redox One leverages Tharisa’s secure access to raw materials and mining expertise. This integration enables the delivery of vertically integrated, cost-effective, and environmentally responsible long-duration storage solutions.
Battery Technology
Redox One’s core innovation lies in its Iron-Chromium Redox Flow Battery technology, which stores energy through reversible redox reactions of iron and chromium ions dissolved in an acidic electrolyte circulating through flow cells. Engineered to address the intermittency of renewable sources, these systems are capable of providing storage durations from roughly six hours up to several days, thereby supporting peak shaving, load shifting, and grid stability.
The choice of a non-flammable, benign electrolyte ensures safe operation across diverse environmental conditions without the fire risks associated with some alternative chemistries. By sourcing abundant iron and chromium via Tharisa’s mining operations, Redox One achieves a lower levelized cost of storage compared to vanadium flow or lithium-ion systems. The design emphasizes sustainability through recyclable components and a chemistry that endures decades with minimal degradation, reflecting a cradle-to-grave approach.
Moreover, the flow architecture decouples power capacity from energy capacity, facilitating modular scaling from pilot installations to utility-scale deployments. The durable chemistry tolerates deep discharge cycles repeatedly, ensuring reliable, long-life operation for grid, industrial, and remote/off-grid applications.
Recent Projects
Redox One has validated its technology at its Electrolyte Development Center in South Africa by deploying demonstration units, including a 40 kWh flow battery and a 5 kW system offering eight hours of duration. These pilot installations demonstrate both performance and longevity under real-world conditions. Emphasizing a “mine-to-megawatt” philosophy, the company showcases full supply chain integration from mineral extraction through Tharisa’s operations to the deployment of battery systems.
Investors
Backed by its parent Tharisa PLC, Redox One benefits from secure material supply and initial funding rooted in the mining group’s equity and resources.
