StarPlus Energy, established in 2022, represents a strategic joint venture between Samsung SDI and Stellantis, focusing on electric vehicle (EV) battery manufacturing in North America. The company’s primary mission centers on developing and producing advanced lithium-ion batteries to support the growing demand for electric vehicles. With substantial investments exceeding $6.3 billion and plans to create 2,800 new jobs, StarPlus Energy demonstrates its commitment to expanding domestic battery production capabilities while supporting the transition to sustainable transportation solutions.

Battery Technology

StarPlus Energy specializes in manufacturing nickel, cobalt, and aluminum (NCA) lithium-ion batteries designed specifically for battery-electric vehicles (BEVs). The company’s manufacturing facilities integrate advanced automation systems and sophisticated testing equipment to ensure consistent quality and optimal performance. Their battery production technology encompasses complete cell manufacturing, module assembly, and final battery pack integration processes.

The company’s technical capabilities include producing high-capacity battery cells with a combined annual output of 67 gigawatt-hours (GWh) from two manufacturing plants. The first facility will generate 33 GWh annually, while the second plant will contribute an additional 34 GWh. These batteries incorporate advanced thermal management systems and sophisticated battery management technology to maximize efficiency and longevity.

StarPlus Energy’s manufacturing approach emphasizes quality control through automated production lines and precise testing protocols. This technical foundation supports Stellantis’ ambitious electrification goals while meeting strict performance and safety standards required for modern electric vehicles.

Recent Projects

In December 2023, StarPlus Energy secured a $7.54 billion loan from the U.S. Department of Energy to support the construction of two lithium-ion battery manufacturing facilities in Kokomo, Indiana. The second plant, announced recently, will begin production in early 2027. These facilities represent significant progress in establishing domestic battery production capabilities and supporting the U.S. electric vehicle supply chain.

Investors

The company’s primary investors are its founding partners, Samsung SDI and Stellantis. Through their joint venture agreement, both companies have committed substantial resources to establish and expand StarPlus Energy’s operations. The U.S. Department of Energy has also demonstrated significant financial support through its Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing Loan Program, providing crucial funding for manufacturing facility development.
