Syrah Resources Ltd is an Australian-based industrial minerals and technology company that has established itself as a global leader in natural graphite and active anode material production. As the only operating vertically integrated natural graphite AAM supplier outside China, the company supplies high-quality, environmentally differentiated products to battery and industrial markets worldwide. Through its advanced production facilities and strategic positioning, Syrah Resources meets the increasing demand for natural graphite and active anode materials, which are essential components in lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles and energy storage systems.

Battery Technology

Syrah Resources specializes in producing active anode materials for lithium-ion batteries through its integrated operations. The company’s technological focus centers on natural graphite processing and transformation into battery-grade materials. At their Vidalia facility in Louisiana, they conduct sophisticated milling, purification, and surface treatment processes to create 18-micron coated purified spherical graphite, a critical component for lithium-ion battery anodes.

The company’s manufacturing capabilities include a production capacity of 350,000 tonnes per annum at the Balama operation and 11,250 tonnes per annum at the Vidalia facility. Their technical expertise extends to both natural graphite processing and active anode material production, ensuring consistent quality and performance in battery applications. While maintaining their focus on graphite-based solutions, Syrah also monitors developments in alternative technologies such as silicon anodes and solid-state batteries, though these remain in developmental stages compared to their established graphite-based products.

Recent Projects

In early 2024, Syrah Technologies secured a significant US$165 million tax credit under the US Inflation Reduction Act. This funding supports the expansion of their Vidalia active anode material facility from 11,250 tpa to 45,000 tpa. The company also achieved IRMA 50 certification for their Balama operation in December 2024, demonstrating their commitment to responsible mining practices. Additionally, Syrah announced plans to restart their Balama graphite project operations in Mozambique during the first quarter of 2025.
