VANEVO, based in Germany, specializes in advanced energy storage systems, with a particular focus on Redox-Flow battery technology. Established in 2018, the company’s objective is to advance the energy transition by developing scalable, sustainable, and affordable energy storage solutions. VANEVO aims to support the expansion of renewable energies like solar and wind power, addressing the need for efficient storage infrastructure. The company’s work centers on creating practical, impactful products from scientific knowledge to meet contemporary energy challenges.

Located in Oldenburg, Germany, VANEVO contributes to the global shift towards renewable energy through its focus on cost-efficient and environmentally responsible energy storage. This includes developing technology to stabilize grids, integrate green energy sources, and provide power for various industrial and e-mobility applications.

Battery Technology

VANEVO’s core innovation lies in its Redox-Flow battery technology. These batteries store electrical energy in liquid electrolytes, enabling independent scaling of energy capacity (electrolyte volume) and power (stack size). This distinct separation allows for flexible and tailored energy storage solutions. A significant advantage of VANEVO’s technology is its extended lifespan, offering over 15,000 charge/discharge cycles, equating to approximately 20 years of operational life.

The company’s approach yields a Levelized Cost of Storage (LCOS) up to 40% lower compared to typical Li-ion batteries. VANEVO’s patent-protected manufacturing process for its battery stacks uses an adhesive bonding method rather than traditional pressing. This method results in lighter, simpler, and more efficient stacks, reducing part count by 40% and costs by 35%. Furthermore, Redox-Flow batteries are recyclable, and their non-flammable aqueous electrolytes enhance safety. They do not rely on critical raw materials like lithium or cobalt, instead using vanadium or alternative abundant materials such as iron or organic compounds. VANEVO offers both these patented stacks and standardized modules (e.g., 10 kW power, 40 kWh capacity) that combine stacks with tanks, sensors, and an integrated battery management system.

Recent Projects

VANEVO GmbH has made progress in its commercial and technological development. Modules produced by the company have been supplied to a Dutch system integrator, facilitating practical application of their technology. In addition, an analysis by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) identified VANEVO as having the lowest cycle costs for Redox-Flow batteries, indicating their economic efficiency.

Investors

VANEVO has received financial backing from diverse sources. This includes grants and capital from the European Innovation Council (EIC), which supports deep-tech startups. NBank Capital Beteiligungsgesellschaft, a subsidiary of the Investment and Development Bank of Lower Saxony, has provided seed and ongoing public investment. Private investors, Smit Asset Management and Bookjans Asset Management, both with focus on renewable energy, have also contributed. Additionally, company founders and executives, including CEO Jan grosse Austing and CFO Uwe Boegershausen, have invested in VANEVO.
