Zenthos Energy, formerly known as Flow Aluminum, is an innovative energy storage company based in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The company is advancing a new class of safe, sustainable, and high-performance batteries utilizing proprietary aluminum and carbon dioxide (Al-CO₂) technology. This patented approach not only provides long-duration energy storage but also captures CO₂ during operation, addressing critical safety and environmental challenges in energy storage. Zenthos Energy’s mission is to accelerate the global transition to clean energy by delivering energy storage systems that are cost-effective, supply-chain resilient, and designed to perform in demanding environments. The company emphasizes creating regenerative storage solutions that contribute positively to both grid and planetary chemistry.

Battery Technology

Zenthos Energy’s core innovation lies in its patented aluminum–CO₂ battery technology. This system uses the electrochemical reaction between aluminum anodes and carbon dioxide cathodes to store and discharge energy. A key advantage of this chemistry is its use of abundant, domestically sourced materials like aluminum, which reduces reliance on critical minerals found in conventional lithium-ion batteries. The technology also stands out for its intrinsic safety, eliminating the risk of thermal runaway, a common concern with some traditional battery chemistries. This makes it suitable for critical applications where safety is a primary concern. The batteries operate effectively in a wide range of temperatures, including extreme cold down to –40°C, broadening their applicability.

The patented battery technology captures CO₂ during operation, offering an environmental benefit beyond energy storage. This contributes to a more sustainable energy ecosystem by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Zenthos Energy’s batteries also boast high cell-level efficiency, minimizing energy losses and offering operational cost advantages. The company’s flagship product, PowerCore™, provides up to 24 hours of discharge capacity, making it suitable for long-duration energy storage needs in various sectors.

Recent Projects

In 2024, Zenthos Energy conducted successful validation tests at the Battery Innovation Center (BIC), demonstrating complete discharge and partial recharge cycles of their commercially relevant pouch-cell aluminum-CO₂ chemistry. These tests confirmed volumetric capacity assumptions and electrode design for metal-gas battery systems. The company also confirmed voltage efficiency exceeding 97% and their batteries’ fire-safe characteristics, supporting their use in stationary and field power energy storage markets. Zenthos Energy was awarded NASA’s Minority University Research and Education Project (MUREP) MPLAN award, recognizing its contributions to sustainable energy solutions.
