ADS-TEC Energy today announced plans for a large-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) in southern Germany. The single-site installation will deliver 1 gigawatt of output and roughly 2 gigawatt-hours of capacity, making it one of the world’s largest BESS facilities. The transmission system operator has granted formal approval for an extra-high voltage grid connection at the chosen location.

Development and financing are targeted for completion by mid-2026, with commissioning scheduled for 2029, subject to regulatory approvals. At full capacity, the storage system will be able to cover the daily electricity needs of approximately 250,000 single-family homes. On-site solar photovoltaic installations with double-digit megawatt peak capacity will be integrated to optimize renewable generation and improve overall project economics.

Based on 2024 market data from P3 Group, a comparable facility could generate around €230 million in annual revenues by participating in wholesale energy, capacity and grid services markets. This revenue potential is expected to support stable long-term cash flows and accelerate the transition to a low-carbon power system.

ADS-TEC Energy will manage all phases of the project lifecycle, including planning, financing, implementation, operation and maintenance. Drawing on more than 15 years of expertise in lithium-ion storage technologies and a proven track record of frequency regulation plants, the company aims to deliver a resilient and sustainable energy asset designed to operate for several decades.

Thomas Speidel, CEO and founder of ADS-TEC Energy, said the project will lay the groundwork for an energy system that balances security of supply with sustainability.
