ai& and Voltaiq will deploy battery energy storage at ai&’s AI data centers in Japan, combining sovereign AI infrastructure with Voltaiq’s AI-powered platform to track battery performance, reduce grid strain, lower costs and ensure safe uptime.

ai& and Voltaiq have announced a partnership to deploy battery energy storage systems (BESS) across ai&’s artificial intelligence data centers in Japan. The collaboration pairs ai&’s sovereign AI compute infrastructure with Voltaiq’s Enterprise Battery AI platform, which tracks and analyzes battery quality, reliability, and safety throughout the full lifecycle—from cell design and manufacturing to system integration, commissioning, and in-field operation.

As AI workloads continue to grow, data centers face increased strain on local electric grids. Integrating BESS can help operators accelerate grid interconnections, lower peak demand charges, boost usable power capacity beyond nominal interconnect limits, and maintain uptime during grid disturbances. These benefits aim to protect against costly downtime, failed model training runs, and potential violations of service-level agreements. At the same time, the risk of battery underperformance, unplanned outages, and safety incidents—such as thermal events—remains a critical operational concern for modern data centers.

Voltaiq’s platform creates a unified digital record by linking every stage of battery development and deployment through a purpose-built data ontology. This common framework connects materials, manufacturing processes, testing results, operational data, and quality metrics, enabling consistent tracing and comparison of battery performance. By correlating field results with upstream design and production factors, the system can automatically detect anomalies and facilitate rapid resolution of quality issues—helping to ensure on-time commissioning, maximize asset lifetime, and maintain peak performance and safety.
