BMW Group and Rimac Technology have partnered to develop the high-voltage battery system for the new all-electric BMW i7 sedan. Central to this collaboration is BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive technology, which introduces the 4695 lithium-ion cylindrical cell. Compared with the prismatic cells used in the previous generation, these new cells offer roughly 20% higher volumetric energy density, enabling greater range and faster charging.

The high-voltage battery integrates Gen6 cell technology into the established Gen5 module design. This approach allows the BMW i7 to achieve a noticeable increase in range without requiring a completely new battery housing or production process. The enhanced charging capability also means that drivers can add more kilowatt-hours in less time, reducing downtime during long trips.

Manufacture of the battery packs takes place at Rimac Technology’s facility in Croatia, where cutting-edge equipment ensures quality and consistency. Completed battery modules are then shipped to BMW’s Dingolfing plant in Germany, the sole production site for the BMW 7 Series. There, they are assembled into battery packs ready for integration into the i7 chassis.

The BMW i7 will make its world premiere on April 22, 2026, at Auto China in Beijing. “We are rolling out Neue Klasse technologies across our entire portfolio, including our flagship electric luxury sedan,” said Dr. Thomas Engelhardt, Senior Vice President of Development for High-Voltage Storage and Charging at BMW Group. “Our collaboration with Rimac Technology exemplifies the strength of European innovation.”

Mate Rimac, Founder and President of Rimac Group and CEO and CTO of Bugatti Rimac, added: “Working with BMW on this project allowed us to fast-track a tailor-made battery solution that maximizes the potential of these new cylindrical cells. We’re proud to see these systems enter production at scale.”

Rimac Technology, a Tier 1 supplier within Rimac Group, specializes in high-voltage battery systems, e-axles, and related electronics and software. Its evolution from a niche supercar supplier to a high-volume automotive partner underscores the company’s ability to deliver advanced, customizable electrification solutions for major global manufacturers.
