BYD’s manufacturing facility in Brazil has secured export orders for 100,000 vehicles from Argentina and Mexico, according to a recent announcement by Executive Vice President Stella Li. The orders are evenly divided, with 50,000 units each destined for Argentina and Mexico. Production at the Camaçari plant in Bahia state officially began on July 1, 2025.
Currently, the facility has an annual capacity of 150,000 vehicles, with plans to expand output to 600,000 units in phased increments. The plant will build a mix of plug-in hybrid and fully electric models, including the Dolphin Mini, BYD King, and Song Pro. The first vehicle produced at Camaçari was the Dolphin Mini, also known locally as the Seagull.
Data from Brazil’s National Association of Automotive Dealers show that BYD sales in the country grew rapidly, reaching approximately 113,000 vehicles in 2024. This figure is a substantial rise from 17,937 registrations in 2023, reflecting strong local demand. Brazil has now become BYD’s largest market outside of China.
In addition to the export orders, BYD plans to invest 300 million Brazilian reais (about 53 million US dollars) to establish a research center in Rio de Janeiro. Groundbreaking is scheduled for later this year, with completion anticipated by 2028. The new facility will feature testing capabilities for vehicle speed, power, endurance, and overall performance. It will also collect tropical climate data, helping BYD tailor future products and technologies to regional conditions.
Last November, the Camaçari plant marked the production of its 10,000th vehicle, underscoring the rapid ramp-up of operations. With the combination of robust domestic sales and growing export commitments, BYD is strengthening its footprint in Latin America and reinforcing its global expansion strategy.
