Chinese automaker BYD has reached a significant production milestone, rolling off its 15 millionth new energy vehicle (NEV). The landmark vehicle is the Denza N8L SUV, which also marks the 15,000th N8L produced under BYD’s Denza sub-brand. The N8L is a large, six-seat plug-in hybrid electric vehicle designed for families, emphasizing safety, comfort and agile handling. Introduced on October 28 with a starting price of RMB 299,800 (approximately US$42,570), it represents one of BYD’s premium model offerings.
This achievement follows the company’s celebration of its 10 millionth NEV in November 2024, demonstrating a rapid scaling of its electrified lineup. According to data compiled by CnEVPost, BYD sold 4,182,038 vehicles from January through November of this year, an 11.3 percent increase compared with the same period last year.
Founded in February 1995, BYD began as a battery manufacturer before formally entering the automotive industry in 2003 with its acquisition of Qinchuan in Xi’an. The company produced its first NEV in December 2008 and achieved its one-millionth NEV output in May 2021, becoming the first Chinese automaker to hit that threshold in the NEV sector. In March 2022, BYD discontinued production and sales of vehicles powered solely by internal combustion engines, focusing exclusively on plug-in hybrid and battery electric models.
Expanding beyond its domestic operations, BYD has also grown its overseas production footprint. In October, its 14 millionth NEV rolled off the line at the company’s plant in Brazil, underscoring its commitment to global electrification. Today, BYD employs more than 900,000 people worldwide, including nearly 110,000 dedicated to research and development, reinforcing its position as a leader in battery technology and electric mobility.
