In the coming weeks, BYD will begin installing its first flash-charging stations outside of China, bringing chargers capable of delivering up to 1,500 kilowatts of power per electric vehicle to Europe. The rollout coincides with the European debut of the updated Denza Z9GT, which is scheduled to appear in Paris on April 8.
The refreshed Denza Z9GT is equipped with BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery, a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cell designed to withstand the high-power input of the flash-charging network. According to BYD, the combination of the new battery pack and charging technology can increase the vehicle’s state of charge from 10% to 70% in approximately five minutes, and from 10% to 97% in about nine minutes. It remains unclear whether those figures will be fully realized on the European version of the model.
BYD has not yet disclosed precise locations or a schedule for its first wave of European installations, but says it will announce deployment details in due course. Earlier this month, the company introduced its second-generation Blade Battery alongside the 1,500-kW flash charger, setting new benchmarks for charging speed. BYD aims to construct 20,000 flash-charging stations across China by the end of this year and to launch the network in overseas markets by the close of 2026 as part of its “Flash Charging Planet” initiative.
The initial group of vehicles compatible with flash charging spans 10 models across BYD’s main and sub-brands. Highlights include the Yangwang U7, which pairs a 150-kWh battery pack with a claimed pure-electric range of 1,006 kilometers, and the updated Denza Z9GT, which is rated for up to 1,036 kilometers on a single charge. Deliveries of the revised Denza Z9GT began in China on March 13. Another offering, the Tai 3 flash-charging edition, is available at a starting price of 153,800 yuan and supports a five-minute rapid-charge cycle.
