Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL), in partnership with Solarpro Technology AD, has connected a 602 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Burgas, Bulgaria, to the national grid. As the country’s largest battery project to date, it increases Bulgaria’s total energy storage capacity by approximately 10%, bolstering the integration of wind and solar power while supporting reliable grid operation.
Solarpro Technology AD managed the engineering, procurement and construction phases as well as the full system integration. Adelin Antonov, CEO and board member at Solarpro Technology AD, noted that close technical collaboration was key to bringing the facility online quickly and reliably. He added, “This project reflects the strong partnership between Solarpro Technology AD and CATL. Delivering what is currently the largest operational battery energy storage facility in Eastern Europe required tight coordination across all levels.”
The BESS is powered by CATL’s TENER energy storage system, a 6 MWh-class solution designed for zero degradation in capacity and power during its first year of operation. Its compact footprint reduces land use by 20% compared with conventional systems, while advanced corrosion and seismic resistance enhance durability under demanding conditions. The zero-degradation feature is projected to improve project economics by increasing the internal rate of return by 1.13%.
Amanda Xu, CTO of CATL’s Energy Storage Systems division and president of ESS Europe, emphasized the significance of local execution combined with global technology: “Solarpro is a leading force in Eastern Europe’s renewable grid integration. Their engineering and construction expertise made them the ideal partner to deploy CATL’s TENER zero-degradation technology at scale.” She added that the success of this project lays the groundwork for introducing the first Tener Stack solution in the region.
Building on this achievement, CATL and Solarpro Technology AD plan to expand their energy storage collaboration over the next two years, contributing to accelerated clean energy development in Bulgaria and neighboring markets.
