At its recent Tech Day event, China-based battery manufacturer CATL unveiled its third-generation Shenxing lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, which delivers industry-leading ultra-fast charging performance. According to the company, the battery can charge from 10 percent to 80 percent in just 3 minutes 44 seconds, from 10 percent to 98 percent in 6 minutes 27 seconds, and from 10 percent to 35 percent in only 1 minute. Under extreme cold conditions (–30 °C), the Shenxing battery is reported to reach 98 percent state of charge in 9 minutes.

The Shenxing 3rd Gen battery achieves an internal resistance as low as 0.25 milliohms—roughly 50 percent lower than the industry average—which enables its rapid charging capabilities. Key technological advancements include:

  • Cell Shoulder Cooling Technology, which improves cooling efficiency by about 20 percent.
  • Precise Temperature Measurement Technology for multi-point monitoring within each cell.
  • Self-Heating Technology that uses high-power pulse heating to enable ultra-fast charging at low temperatures.

In durability testing, the battery retained more than 90 percent of its original capacity after 1,000 consecutive ultra-fast charging cycles. To address traditional challenges in winter charging, CATL’s pulse-based self-heating system brings cells quickly up to optimal temperature, allowing vehicles to charge rapidly even on standard charging infrastructure.

In addition to the Shenxing LFP cell, CATL introduced an integrated ultra-charge and battery-swap solution. This dual approach gives users flexibility in harsh environments, allowing them to choose between high-speed charging or a full battery swap when temperatures drop to –30 °C.

At the same event, CATL also debuted the third generation of its Qilin ternary lithium battery, which shares the same ultra-fast charging profile as Shenxing 3rd Gen. Industry data from the China Automotive Battery Innovation Alliance (CABIA) shows CATL leading the global power battery market with a 48.3 percent share, followed by BYD at 17.0 percent and CALB at 5.9 percent. According to the China Power Battery and Electric Vehicle Association (CPCA), CATL’s market share exceeded 50 percent in the first quarter of 2026.
