Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) commenced construction on its new lithium iron phosphate battery factory in Figueruelas, Aragon, Spain, on November 26, 2025. The 50-50 joint venture with Stellantis received more than 300 million euros in European Union funding. The facility represents a 4.04 billion euro investment and marks CATL’s third battery plant in Europe. CATL first announced the joint venture with Stellantis in December 2024, aiming to establish a large-scale LFP battery production facility in Spain.
Construction will involve approximately 2,000 Chinese technical staff and construction workers, followed by the recruitment and training of roughly 3,000 local Spanish employees. According to union representatives, Chinese technicians and management personnel have already begun arriving in the region, with the total number expected to reach about 2,000 by the end of next year.
“We don’t know this technology, these components – we’ve never made them before,” said David Romeral, director general of CAAR Aragon, a network of automotive businesses in Aragon.
“They’re years ahead of us. All we can do is watch and learn” Romeral said.
The plant is scheduled to enter production by late 2026, targeting an annual capacity of up to 50 gigawatt-hours. CATL has identified Stellantis as the primary customer for the new facility, which will supply battery cells for electric vehicles produced at Stellantis’s Zaragoza manufacturing site.
