Saudi Arabia’s first batch of large-scale battery energy storage projects has moved into the construction phase, and Gotion High-Tech has secured the core 6 GWh energy storage order for the program, according to a post on the battery manufacturer’s WeChat account. The company said it will provide complete energy storage solutions for three major storage sites in Saudi Arabia.
Gotion described the project as an entry into the high-end energy storage market in the Middle East and said it reflects the growing involvement of Chinese energy storage companies in the region’s energy transition. The Middle East presents difficult operating conditions for energy storage systems, including extreme aridity, frequent sandstorms and wide temperature differences between day and night. The project also uses a BOO, or Build-Own-Operate, model, which places high demands on equipment reliability, durability and long-term performance.
To address those requirements, Gotion said it developed an integrated solution tailored to the project. At the center of the system is the company’s Qianyuan Smart Energy Storage System, which it described as a highly integrated platform with large capacity and long cycle life. The system uses modular integration, precise temperature control and intelligent battery management technologies to support stable operation across a temperature range of -30 C to 55 C. It also includes protection measures for high temperatures, wind and sand to improve stability and reliability under harsh environmental conditions.
Once the project is operational, it will store excess solar power generated during the day and discharge electricity during periods of peak demand. Gotion said this will help improve the alignment between renewable power generation and electricity consumption while supporting the Saudi grid’s ability to absorb more renewable energy and respond flexibly to changing demand.
The company said it is aiming to develop its international business model beyond traditional manufacturing toward a combination of Chinese technology and global services. It added that it plans to continue expanding in overseas new energy markets and working with regional partners to provide energy storage technologies and integrated solutions in support of the global energy transition and low-carbon development.
