Hydrovolt and the Icelandic Recycling Fund (IRF) announced on October 21, 2026, a collaboration covering end-of-life batteries from electric vehicles and industrial applications in Iceland. The agreement provides a basis for Hydrovolt to collect, transport and recycle the batteries at its facility in Norway.

IRF administers Iceland’s extended producer responsibility system for selected products, including EV batteries. It manages and distributes recycling fees in accordance with the country’s Act on Recycling Fees. The fund said the collaboration is intended to support an efficient system for managing used batteries and recovering raw materials as battery volumes increase.

Electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles account for 17 percent of Iceland’s total vehicle fleet, according to the announcement. Close to 80 percent of new cars sold in the country are electric, following steady growth over the past several years. The increasing share creates a need for systems to handle battery waste safely and sustainably.

Hydrovolt offers reuse assessments and recycling services for used batteries from electric vehicles and industrial applications. Under the collaboration, the company plans to use its logistics network and recycling process to recover critical raw materials from batteries collected in Iceland.

Hydrovolt operates a battery recycling facility in Fredrikstad, Norway, which the company describes as the largest in the Nordic region. The plant has a design capacity of 12,000 tonnes of battery packs, equivalent to batteries from 25,000 to 30,000 cars annually. Hydrovolt reports a total recycling rate of close to 100 percent at the facility.
