LG Energy Solution announced on September 22, 2026, a strategic partnership with B2U Storage Solutions to repurpose batteries for grid-scale energy storage in the United States. Under the agreement, B2U will receive priority access to battery capacity, while the companies will explore opportunities in the U.S. battery energy storage systems (BESS) market.
The partners plan to apply B2U’s patented technologies to LG Energy Solution batteries, extending their use before recycling. The companies said the approach is intended to keep batteries in service longer while deferring the costs and environmental impacts associated with recycling. In BESS applications, the repurposed batteries could continue providing value for years.
The partnership is focused on making BESS more accessible through cost-competitive storage offerings for utilities, energy storage developers and large commercial electricity users, including data centers. LG Energy Solution and B2U are also working to expand U.S. energy storage infrastructure and strengthen grid stability by using repurposed batteries to provide gigawatt-hours of storage capacity.
“This partnership advances our strategy to extend the value of our batteries beyond their original applications,” said Seung Tak Joo, leader of the Energy as a Service business department at LG Energy Solution. He added that using the batteries for grid storage could lengthen their useful life and create growth opportunities with long-term economic returns.
The companies said combining B2U’s technology with access to a reliable battery supply is intended to lower energy storage costs and improve the bankability of projects. Their effort targets a market in which rising electricity demand and the integration of intermittent renewable energy sources are placing additional pressure on the U.S. power grid.
Battery energy storage systems store electricity for later use, helping balance supply and demand, ease grid strain and improve energy resilience. Through the partnership, LG Energy Solution and B2U plan to capture additional economic value from batteries before they enter recycling.
