Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer Nio has officially entered the Latin American market with the opening of its first store in Costa Rica. The company launched its inaugural local “Nio House” on March 26 in San José, partnering with Horizontes Cielo Azul, the national general distributor for Costa Rica. This marks Nio’s initial foothold in Latin America and represents the company’s first overseas deployment of its three-brand strategy—Nio, Onvo, and Firefly.

The new showroom, situated in the Combai Mercado Urbano complex in the Escazú canton, serves as a multifunctional experience space where customers can explore Nio’s full smart EV lineup.

Models on display include the Nio ET5 Touring, EL6, and EL8, alongside the Onvo L60 and the recently introduced Firefly. The EL6 and EL8 correspond to the ES6 and ES8 models in China. Visitors will also have the opportunity to place pre-orders for the Onvo L90 electric SUV during EXPOMOVIL, Costa Rica’s major annual auto show, which begins on April 16.

Nio cited Costa Rica’s rapidly developing EV market and growing consumer demand for high-quality smart electric vehicles as key drivers behind the expansion. Horizontes Cielo Azul, the country’s largest EV dealer, was highlighted for its proven track record in building leading market share for Chinese automotive brands.

This Latin American launch follows Nio’s global rollout under a national general distributor model, a strategic shift away from its earlier asset-heavy direct sales approach. Since debuting internationally in October 2021—starting with Norway and later expanding to Germany, the Netherlands, and Sweden—Nio has gradually moved toward a more asset-light operating structure. Industry reports earlier this month indicated that Nio is preparing similar adjustments in its remaining European markets.

In parallel with the Costa Rica opening, Nio recently launched its Firefly-branded vehicles in Thailand, underscoring the company’s continued efforts to broaden its overseas presence.
