Sakuu, a provider of commercial-scale equipment for battery manufacturing, has been named a winner in Fast Company’s 2025 World Changing Ideas Awards for its Kavian dry electrode printing process. The awards, which recognize initiatives that advance safety, sustainability, and equity, selected 100 projects from more than 1,500 submissions based on criteria including impact, scalability, and design.

The Kavian Platform is the first system to manufacture lithium-ion battery electrodes using a dry process. This approach reduces factory footprint by more than half compared to traditional wet coating, drying, and calendering systems, while eliminating toxic solvents and water. Sakuu’s dry process is compatible with multiple chemistries—such as NCM, NCA, LFP, graphite, and silicon-graphite—and is designed to accommodate emerging materials like aluminum-ion and sodium-ion.

Independent testing of the Kavian process has shown that the dry-printed electrodes match or exceed the electrochemical performance of those produced by conventional wet methods. The platform also offers operational benefits, including a 55% reduction in CO2 emissions, 20% lower capital equipment costs, and 30% savings in utility expenses. Sakuu holds 113 patents and more than 130 trade secrets in related materials, processes, and manufacturing technologies.

“It’s a great honor to have Fast Company recognize our dry electrode printing process as a World Changing Idea,” said Robert Bagheri, Sakuu founder and CEO. “This award further validates the effectiveness of our Kavian Platform for enabling battery cell producers and OEMs to scale up production to support the growth, sustainability, and efficiency demands of the future.”

Sakuu has already delivered hundreds of meters of high-quality dry electrodes to customers in the battery and electric vehicle sectors. Headquartered in Silicon Valley, the company was recognized as FII8 Innovator 2024 at the Future Investment Initiative Conference, and its Kavian Platform was named one of Time magazine’s Best Inventions of 2024.
