Samsung SDI plans to start mass production of sulfide-based all-solid-state batteries at its Ulsan plant in H2 2027 as part of a 25 trillion-won investment. It targets over 900 Wh/L density and will scale overseas post-launch.

Samsung SDI has confirmed plans to begin mass production of its all-solid-state batteries at its Ulsan plant in South Korea during the second half of 2027. The company aims to be the first local manufacturer to commercialize this next-generation battery technology.

As part of a broader 14-year investment plan running from 2026 through 2040, Samsung SDI will invest a total of 25 trillion won (approximately 110 billion yuan) across its Ulsan and Cheonan facilities. Of that amount, 16 trillion won is allocated to the Ulsan site for establishing production lines not only for all-solid-state batteries but also for lithium iron phosphate cells intended for energy storage systems and for sodium-ion batteries. The remaining 9 trillion won will be used to expand Cheonan into a technology verification hub. Its dry electrode pilot line is already operational, setting the stage for future cost reductions at scale.

In preparation for commercial output, a 6,500-square-meter S-Line pilot at Samsung SDI’s Suwon R&D center has completed multiple rounds of formulation and process validation. The forthcoming Ulsan production line will leverage these validated processes to accelerate the transition to full mass production. Technically, the company is focusing on sulfide-based solid electrolytes, targeting an energy density above 900 Wh/L.

Prototypes of the solid-state cells have already been shipped to prospective customers in the electric vehicle, embodied AI and humanoid robotics sectors for performance testing. Samsung SDI plans to roll out the technology domestically first, then replicate the manufacturing capacity in overseas plants once the scaling model is proven reliable.

The second half of 2027 has become a pivotal timeline for the global solid-state battery arena, with competitors such as Toyota, Geely, Chery and BYD also targeting similar launch windows for their own solid-state battery initiatives.
