Scania Electric Truck Configuration Offers 720 Km Range

Scania has developed an electric long-haul truck configuration offering up to 720 kilometers of range. The design adds two behind-cab battery packs with about 356 kWh of capacity and supports megawatt charging.

Scania has outlined an electric long-haul truck configuration designed to provide up to 720 kilometers of range. The approach combines batteries mounted on the chassis and under the cab with additional battery packs behind the cab, alongside MCS charging. It is intended to help operators balance range, payload, charging requirements and productivity on European long-haul routes.

In a typical configuration, two MP20 battery packs can be installed behind the cab, adding approximately 356 kWh of capacity to the batteries under the cab and on the chassis. According to Scania, the layout increases installed battery capacity without relying solely on chassis-mounted packs, giving operators more flexibility to balance payload and range.

The battery-behind-cab layout can be combined with Scania’s protruding Increased Vehicle Dimension front. This enables a 6×2*4 European trailer combination with the maximum available range, including configurations in which the total vehicle length exceeds 16.5 meters. Scania said the arrangement maintains trailer compatibility and turning performance.

The new front can also reduce energy consumption by up to 3%, depending on vehicle specification and operation. Scania noted that aerodynamic drag represents a larger share of total energy use in electric trucks.

“Electric trucks are already part of the transport system, but long-haul operations place very different demands on range, payload and charging,” said Lars Gustafsson, senior vice president and head of Solutions Management at Scania. “With this solution, Scania is showing how those pieces can come together in a practical way for customers who want to electrify demanding long-distance routes.”

Scania said the combination of expanded battery capacity, MCS charging and trailer-compatible vehicle dimensions is designed to support electric tractor configurations using standard European trailer combinations.
